Classes and Concerts

What is this music?

Turkey has a 800 year old devotional music tradition. This legacy has been preserved and passed down orally since the 13th century. There is a large interest in the US to keep this music alive: learning, preserving and passing this legacy down so it will continue. Timuçin has been synthesizing the oldest known versions of these ayins and ilahis including the original composers intent based upon how the makam was played originally and putting them into formal notations for us to learn.

This music includes music theory, the history of the songs and the authors, and how to play the pieces as originally written all together with a group of other likeminded friends who share the same love of music.

Who is this for?

All musicians interested in Classical and Folk Turkish and Mevlevi Ceremonial Musical traditions are invited to join us. This is a very rare opportunity for dedicated in depth instruction in the U.S.

Dr. Timuçin Çevikoğlu, master Turkish musician, comes once a year to offer instruction in Voice, Turkish Ney, Percussion, and Vocal/Instrumental. Classes will include Turkish Makam (Melodic Theory) and Üsül (Rhythmic Theory) for the Turkish Classical and Devotional styles.
