Our Bendir and Kudûm Beginner/Intermediate Class is a unique opportunity to learn from the best in the field. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced musician, this class is for anyone passionate about music and eager to explore new sounds. Learn the intricate rhythms, techniques, and cultural significance of the Bendir and Kudûm drums in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in a Mevlevi home in the Connecticut countryside. Bring your tunable frame drum and a music stand. (Note from a past student: quality tunable frame drums can be purchased online. Reputable brands include Remo and Meinl.) Note: There will be opportunities to continue with drum instruction by attending additional hybrid classes offered on drumming as Timucin’s U.S. tour continues.

This class is for people who may be interested in participating in and supporting the Zikr (meditative dancing, chanting and musicianship) of the Sufis and would like to deepen their understanding of what goes into a Zikr.

Examples will be drawn from the large body of ilahis that form an important part of Turkish Sufi music. Ilahis are Sufi sacred songs that are a means by which the culture of Sufism has been handed down orally throughout generations. These poems set to music are sung before, during, or after zikr, most often as an additional layer that is heard above the chanting of the names of Allah. In their poetic lyrics, ilahis carry the philosophy of Sufism, here the focus will be on two or three ilahis. This class will be offered with a format in which participants will sing/drum/play along with Timucin (while muted). The meanings of the texts will also be looked at. There will be some theoretical component of this class to underscore basic principles and differentiate subtle characteristics, but the focus will be mostly practical.
